USB-C Power Upgrades

The original power supplies in retro consoles are now decades old. Ageing capacitors, heat and mains-side wear are among the most common reasons a console stops powering on, or becomes unreliable once it warms up. A USB-C upgrade runs the console from a modern USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger instead.

A USB-C PD supply is smaller, cooler and far better regulated than anything available when these consoles were new — and when it eventually needs replacing, it is an off-the-shelf part rather than a hunt for a decades-old brick.

USB-C Power Supply Board

For consoles with a power supply built in, we remove the original internal supply and fit a USB-C PD board in its place. The board and fitting are both included.

  • Sega Saturn — 12V / 3A
  • Sega Dreamcast — 12V / 3A
  • Nintendo GameCube — 12V / 3A
  • PlayStation (original Fat) — 12V / 3A. Not for the PS One.
  • PlayStation 2 (Fat) — 15V / 3A. Not for the PS2 Slim, which uses an external power adapter.

Prefer to fit one yourself? The boards are also sold on their own in our Power Solutions and Adapters collection.

N64 Pow

The N64 Pow replaces the Nintendo 64's heavy original power brick. It slots into the power bay at the back of the console, sits flush, and is around 90% smaller and 80% lighter than the original. It fits every Nintendo 64, NTSC and PAL, and runs from a 12V / 3A USB-C PD charger.

Choosing a Charger

Every USB-C power upgrade needs a USB-C Power Delivery charger that supplies its exact voltage at the full current. A charger that cannot supply that profile will not run the console — standard 5V phone chargers and non-PD chargers will not work, and plenty of USB-C chargers skip 12V or 15V altogether, or offer it only at reduced current.

  • 12V / 3A — Saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube and PlayStation boards, and the N64 Pow.
  • 15V / 3A — the PlayStation 2 board.

Our GaN USB-C chargers list exactly which ports supply each profile, so one charger can run several consoles.

Which Should I Choose?

If your console has a power supply built inside it, choose the USB-C Power Supply Board. For the Nintendo 64, choose the N64 Pow. Consoles that already use an external adapter, such as the PS2 Slim or the Mega Drive, do not need either — a USB-C power cable covers them.

Return Postage

Return postage is invoiced once the work is complete. We return your console with the same Australia Post service you used to send it — if it arrived by Express, it goes back by Express.
